At one time, Malaysia had so many lawyers it used to be a joke that if you threw a stone in any direction, you would be sure to hit a lawyer. The same could be said about people with honorary titles like Tun, Tan Sri, Datuk Seri, Datuk, Dato and the like.
In June this year, in conjunction with the King's official birthday celebrations, a total of 241 honorary titles and awards were conferred. Given there are 13 states in the country, and the custom for each Head of State to confer honorary titles and awards to deserving citizens on the occasion of their birthday, there must be hundreds of thousands of such recipients by now.
Are the recipients truly deserving of the awards? Do they live up to their titles?
Do a Google search on 'Datuks arrested" - you will be amazed at the results.
At official government functions, acknowledging the presence of dignitaries before commencing a speech can take several minutes. There are so many Yang Berhormat (YB) or The Honorable So-and-So on the list to plough through. But this is standard protocol, and Malaysians generally accept the practice.
