"Whatever we do in life, we need a higher goal. I started off being no different from anybody else. Like any other sportsman, I was in it for the medals. Winning was everything. But along the way, I discovered what was of true value - not the medal, but the people - the people who are in need and whose lives I can touch." (From an interview in Prime magazine Jan-Feb 2009)Now in a twist of fate, Dr Tan is in need of financial and moral support to fight his battle against cancer. In April 2009, he was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Since then he has been through months of expensive chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments, and recently underwent bone marrow transplant.
